Split

General Information about Split

Split, which was originally inhabited by the Greek and was known as Aspalathos is a city well worth visiting. Home to over 221,000 residents, Split is Croatia's second largest city but is also the largest city of the region of Dalmatia.

One of the first places you should visit when you arrive at Split is the Historic Centre of the city which has been listed as a World Heritage Site. Because of city's proximity to the Adriatic Sea coastline, Split is very much a typical Mediterranean city. There is plenty to keep you occupied with a variety of outdoor activities ranging from sailing to just relaxing on one the many beautiful beaches.

Visiting the Palace of Diocletian is a must which the emperor Diocletian built for his retirement in the fourth century A.D. Built along the Dalmatian coastline the extensive palace encompasses a watchtower, a stunning villa, an enclosed courtyard, religious buildings, private apartments for the emperor, a residential complex. There is much more to see within the palace with its extensive detail and fascinating history.

If you would like to see some amazing views of the city then a trip to the Saint Duje's Cathedral is in order. Dating back to 305 A.D and thought to be the oldest cathedral in the world. Split also boasts a number of museums and art galleries that are well worth visiting with the Archaeological Museum dating back to 1820.

Getting to Split is easy with regular flights landing at the extremely busy Split Airport. But Split is also easily accessible via bus, train or car.
