Dubrovnik

General Information about Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is an ancient city which is located in the south of Croatia on the Adriatic Sea coast. Dubrovnik is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia and the Adriatic area and has been nicknamed the 'Pearl of the Adriatic'. The area of Dubrovnik was originally founded in the 7th century and was been ruled by many countries and empires before becoming a part of independent Croatia in 1991 after the break down of Yugoslavia. Today Dubrovnik has a population of over 43,000 people.

Dubrovnik features many attractions, sites and places of interest that have made the city a very popular tourist destination. The few remaining renaissance buildings in Dubrovnik are popular places to visit and include Sponza Palace, Rectors Palace and St Saviour Church. There are also many churches that are popular places to visit, but the most striking of Dubrovnik's features are the walls that run 2 kilometres around the city which were built between the 13th and 16th centuries and are still intact today.

St Blaise's Church is one of the most visited sites in Dubrovnik and is a much beloved part of the city. Built in 1715 to replace another church that was destroyed in an earthquake, St Blaise'd Church is a baroque style church that was modeled after St Maruitius Church in Venice. St Blaise's Church is famous for the marble altars it features as well as the 15th century statue of St Blaise that is made of silver gilt.

Rectors Palace is one of the most famous buildings that remains from the renaissance period in Dubrovnik. Built in the 15th century, Rectors Palace is a predominantly gothic building which features renaissance elements and was built to house the ruler of Dubrovnik. Today the palace is used as a museum and features fully restored rooms, paintings and many other items from Dubrovnik's history including the famous statue of Miho Pracat which dates from 1638.
