General Information about Charleroi
Set along the Sambre river, Charleroi has been inhabited since pre-historic times but was officially established as a city in 1666 and originally had a population of approximately fifty residents. Today Charleroi is home to over 201,000 resident and is just over forty-five minutes away from Brussels.
Charleroi is neighboured by Marcinelle and Lodelinsart within the Wallonia Region in the province of Hainaut. Cherleroi is very much a French Community with the majority of residents speaking French.
Charleroi boasts many interesting sights and attractions that should not be missed and one not to be missed is the Abbaye d'Aulne. Abbaye d'Aulne is a historical Abbey of Medieval architecture which dates back to the 7th century.
