Ypres

General Information about Ypres

Ypres which has been inhabited since as far back as the Middle Ages is set within West Flanders just fifty minutes away from Gent and just over an hour away from Brussels. Ypres is home to over 35,000 residents and has played a strong role in the World War I.

It was here that the Battle of Passchendael took place and because of this many of the city's buildings were destroyed. Many of these buildings have since been rebuilt such as the Cloth Hall. The Cloth Hall that stands today is identical to the one that was built back in the 13th century.

One of Ypres most important monuments is the Menin Gate Memorial which is a tribute to the Allied soldiers who were sent to the front. The Menin Gate was built back in 1927 and within the Hall of Memory you will see 54,896 names of Commonwealth soldiers who faithfully served their country.
