Gent

General Information about Gent

Located within the northern parts of Belgium within Flemish region is the city of Gent. Gent which is also known as Ghent or Gand has been inhabited since the stone and iron ages. The architecture of this historical city has very strong medieval influences set along the canal's and are of particular beauty during the evenings. Gent is a popular tourist and holiday destination with its mystical atmosphere and its carfree city centre.

Gent which is just over forty minutes away from Brussels is home to over 233,000 residents, making Gent the third most populated city in Belgium after Antwerp. Gent has plenty of fascinating museums worth visiting with the Museum of Fine Arts being one of the most visited. Also known as the Museum voor Schone Kunsten has recently been restored in 2007.

While you are visiting Gent be sure to visit the Belfry of Ghent which is a medieval tower that was built back in the 13th century, measuring ninety-one metres high. Other popular monuments worth visiting are the city's three Béguinages which has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Getting to Gent is easy with regular trains travelling from Brussels with two train stations known as the Gent-Dampoort and the Gent-Sint-Pieters station.
